Frequently Asked Questions
What is a terrarium?
A terrariums is an enclosed ecosystem, in which plants and small insects can thrive.
Why is there condensation on the glass?
Condensation is good for terrariums. Terrariums are self-sustaining ecosystems, and thus, emulate the water cycle. The terrarium should mist up during the morning and at night. If you are seeing big droplets on the glass, it has probably been over-watered. Simply leave the lid off over night and replace it in the morning.
Do I need to water my terrarium?
You shouldn't need to for a while. Terrariums are self-sustaining ecosystems. They water themselves (as long as they are closed). Some terrariums are known to have gone on for years without adding new water. If you think your terrarium is in need of some water, simply spray the plants with a drizzle of water and then seal it back up. Make sure not to do this often.
Where is the best place to keep my terrarium?
Make sure your terrarium is in a sunny spot indoors, but NOT in direct sunlight. If the terrarium is in direct sunlight, it can dry out the plants, and may even burn them. Do not leave your terrarium outside.
Do I have to trim the plants in the terrarium?
You can trim them if you want to, but if you want your terrarium to look overgrown, that is fine too. Just be wary that if you allow your terrarium to overgrow, some plants may block others from getting enough light, which could cause it to die.
What should I do if the leaves are turning brown?
Plants lose leaves and grow new ones all the time. If you think it's unsightly, you can cut the leaf off the plant. Otherwise you can let nature take its course. When it dies, a new leaf will probably grow. If the dead leaf falls off, it will be beneficial to the soil.
Why are there insects in my terrarium?
Insects in your terrarium is a good sign. It means your terrarium is thriving. Most of them are beneficial to the terrarium, and will help to promote growth and get rid of mold.
How can I clean my terrarium?
Simply get a paper towel or a microfiber cloth and wipe the inside of the terrarium. You can also spray down the side of the glass with a small portion of water. If you do this, make sure to wipe off any excess water. Do not use any chemicals.
